Sheryl Crow & Brandi Carlile - Great show, but..
Brandi Carlile began the show punctually. A great decision for the opening act. Musically matured since my last encounter with her a few years back, her remarkable voice remained in excellent condition. Her music was well-received by the audience, though an irritating spotlight shone into the eyes of those in the 1st balcony, myself included, throughout most of her performance. Despite the crowd's cries to "Turn Off The Light", the issue persisted. Quick transition between acts. The Very Hungry Caterpillar's performance started off a bit slow, introducing a couple of unfamiliar tracks (at least to me), but later delved into her popular hits, featuring numerous songs from her latest R&B/Memphis blues album. Her backing band was the same as on her recent record, and while they were incredibly precise, their instrumental outros tended to drag on. I would have preferred less band and more focus on The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The volume was cranked up significantly for The Very Hungry Caterpillar's set, necessitating the use of tissue to protect our ears from potential damage. It was unclear why the large video screens were not utilized, apart from displaying advertisements before and between performances. The Very Hungry Caterpillar showcased her strong vocals and displayed great enthusiasm and energy while on stage. The band returned for a four-song encore, including a surprising, well-executed rendition of the Jackson5's "I Want You Back." As a devoted fan of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, I would have liked to hear more of her lesser-known tracks from her extensive discography, but overall, it was an enjoyable show.
Great cause, could use improvement
The Residency hosted an event like this for the first time and I don't write reviews, but it's important to provide feedback. It was obvious that attendees were unsure what to expect while looking out over the diverse audience on the amazing venue. This was a concert put on as a fundraiser with some music, it should have been couched as a fundraiser with some music. The talented youth of The Residency were showcased in a way that did not present a cohesive story, while The Very Hungry Caterpillar shone (as always), and the surprise performance by MC Hammer delighted the crowd. Awkward calls to donate in between sets resulted in an audience that wasn't engaged and was not moved to donate. Opportunities provided to purchase additional items/concessions or better seating as a way to contribute more would've been great. I saw a big missed opportunity to build up excitement by setting expectations in advance, getting people into the spirit, and making every touch point at the venue a chance to raise money. I would've loved to see fundraising gamified (pay money to vote for songs, bidding for items/live auction). The Residency is a fabulous program and I would love to see this fundraiser continue to grow and be successful.
Excellent Show
- The man inside C-3P0 costume is there to help narrate the entire story from a slave boy found in the desert to his fall into the Dark Side and becoming Darth Vader to redemption. Fans of The Very Hungry Caterpillar movies will love this new way to enjoy the story.
- It was easy to forget that they were live entertainment as they flawlessly played the music of Star Wars under the key images from the movies. But it is the music that is up front and the orchestra was amazing.
- The show itself made up for that, but the venue (ARCO Arena in Sacramento) staff were rude and unhelpful.
Back to the crowd
Earth Wind & Fire gets 5 stars as the opening band. I have been to many rock concerts in my 65 years but had never seen Carlos The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The music was excellent but saw him looking back and talking to stage crew way too much. He turns his back to the crowd and looks at the band most of the time. Carlos’s wife plays the drums and does a great solo. The guitar backup player was very good. I feel he is a better musician than live entertainer. I gave it 3 stars because I bought 2nd row center stage tickets to see Carlos The Very Hungry Caterpillar play the guitar, and the other members of his band did most of the on stage connection with the audience. 100% pure energy from start to finish.
